Liberty Square - parte 2 (ou Haunted Mansion!)

Agora sim... a diva da Liberty Square!

Haunted Mansion...

A ideia é básica: uma mansão mal assombrada.

"Dear sweet Leota, beloved by all
In regions beyond now, but having a ball"

Madame Leota's gypsy wagon

(English version below)

Liberty Square - part 2 (or Haunted Mansion!)

Now we're talking... the diva of Liberty Square!

Haunted Mansion...

I'll warn you, foolish mortals: Have a seat for there are many stories...

The idea is simple: a haunted house. In this case, by 999 ghosts that await the thousandth to join them.

But since we're talking Disney, the plot doesn't stop there. On the contrary.

There are many stories behind this attraction, and numerous characters created along the years. Much of it is not clear, which is part of the charm and mistery, since a lot comes from word of mouth and urban legends passed on by cast members and imagineers...

But some legends and characters are popular and I'll tell you a bit of what I know and what there seems to be some level of agreement on.

So, here we go.

Madame Leota

The cemetery on the entrance of the mansion has tombstones with some interesting and funny sayings. The names on them are reference to imagineers involved on the attraction.

Of all, the tombstone that most catches your attention is the one that has a woman's face, Leota Thomas, that once in a while opens her eyes and takes a quick look around.

"Dear sweet Leota, beloved by all
In regions beyond now, but having a ball"

The most curious fact is that Leota is a real person. Actually, was. She worked for Disney since before it opened and was very close to Walt himself. She was involved on the developement of many attractions, including the Haunted Mansion. But she's already passed away and, for the looks of it, she made the mansion her home...

Leota's part doesn't end at the tombstone.

She is known as Madame Leota and is the face that appears on the crystal ball, on the scene where she summons the spirits of the mansion to "come out and socialize" with the visitors. (The voice is the same of Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent)

Besides that, she is also portrayed again at the very end of the attraction in the form of a small image of a bride-doll dressed in white, that invites the guest to "Hurry baaaack... hurry baaaaack..." - This part os not exactly consensual, because there is also a story we'll see later on, involving the owner of the mansion ans his dead bride.

Just outside the mansion there's a wagon that sells Haunted Mansion merchandise. It's also named after Leota:

Madame Leota's gypsy wagon
I found an interesting interview with Leota's former sister-in-law, who tells some details about her life here.

And out of curiosity, I also found a picture of her, alive and kicking:

Leota Thomas
Ghost Host

Another known character - only for its voice - is the "Ghost Host".

He is the one that greets us on the entrance of the mansion, with a sinister voice and accompanies us throughout the ride.

One of the rumors is that he's the piano player that cats his shadow on the wall in one of the mansion's corridors.

During special Halloween events, he usually narrates the parade and/or fireworks.

The caretaker and his dog

One of the most popular scenes in the attraction is the cemetery. Right outside the entrance, by the gates, a caretaker holds a lantern and looks terrified. Next to him, a dog that's nothing but skin and bones doesn't look very happy either...

Aside from the fact that they are practically the only living creatures on the atraction, I don't know any curious facts regarding these two characters. But since I've seen them "in person" on the Halloween parade, at "Mickey's not-so-scary Halloween Party", they've become two of my favorites!

Flesh and blood - happy to see that the dog looks healthier here!

The death of the bride

There are many versions about the death of the bride of Master Gracey, the mansion's owner, who haunts the attic.

Some say she killed herself, some that she died in an accident (that I'll tell you below), but the only thing most people agree on is that Master Gracey isn't the one who killed her.

One of the stories is that she liked to play tricks on people and so one day she hid in a trunk (dressed on her wedding gown, what else?) to scare her fiancé. But she ended up locked in and suffocated.

The ring

I've heard from different sources that there's an engagement ring encrusted on a brick wall on the attraction exit.

It's supposed to belong to Master Gracey's late bride, who threw it from the wall during a fight and it ended up embeded on the wall.

During my last visit, I searched for it but couldn't find it. So I asked a cast member about it and she told me that it was now back on the bride's finger, up in the attic. (Humm... right.)

A variation of the story is that the ring is actually on the floor and got stuck there when the dead bride was being transported on the carriage. Somehow the ring slipped from her finger, getting stepped on by the horse.

Truth is I could never actually see the damn thing myself, but I've seen some pictures online...

Here's one:

And to wrap up, I think it's worth mentioning that Haunted Mansion is the only attraction present on every Disney park around the world.

If you read this far and still don't feel like visiting the mansion, here's a photo from its version in Paris...
